The Trail of the Saints in Calabria
The following itinerary highlights the extraordinary devotion in Calabria to the Marian cult; many of the places listed here commemorate apparitions (Conflenti) or miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary (Sanctuary of St. Luke), or are linked to images that depict her (Rossano Calabro, Cerchiara di Calabria, San Sosti, Melito di Porto Salvo); there is a strong connection between Paola and the town's local saint (Francis), while the name of Serra San Bruno commemorates the Saint who introduced the Carthusian order into Calabria from France. The Sanctuary of St. John Theresti at Bivongi is closely linked to the ancient Eastern Orthodox Church and is still entrusted to Basilian monks; finally in Petilia Policastro they worship the Holy Thorn, an ancient relic from the Crown used during the crucifixion of the Jesus.
