The project

The Routes of Faith was originally an idea of the Rieti Tourist Board and from the beginning it proved a great success, with the creation, in December 2003, of the itinerary known as The St. Francis Walk, which consists of an 80 km route that can be explored entirely on foot, on horseback or by mountain bike and which originally was entirely within the Rieti area.

The project has now become even larger, growing to include 1300 kilometres of trails, which guide the visitor on a journey between the major towns and cities of Italy: The Via di Roma - the Via Francigena of St. Francis through Umbria and Lazio, the previously mentioned St. Francis Walk in the Sacred Rieti Valley, and the Benedictine Way, which leads visitors along a route extending from Umbria to Lazio, touching the territories of Norcia, Farfa and the Sabine area, as well as Rome, the Aniene Valley and the Ciociaria, until it arrives in the territory of Molise and the Route of the Saints, which, by following the ancient ‘tratturi' or sheep tracks, reaches as far as the sea at Termoli; The Trail of the Saints in Abruzzo, which visits places associated with different cults; The Trail of the Saints in Calabria, which links together a number of Marian sites and some that still retain ancient ties with the Eastern Orthodox Church.

To promote and publicise the project, a system of information boards and signage was installed at each stopping point on the route and an integrated marketing plan was developed, which included an outdoor and print based advertising campaign, as well as direct marketing initiatives aimed at religious associations and ecotourism, biking and trekking groups, and also featured a significant web presence with the sites www.camminidifede.it , www.viabenedicti.it , www.viafrancigenadisanfrancesco.com and www.camminodifrancesco.it.
